What was Jenna Ortega’s Childhood Like?

Jenna Marie Ortega, born on September 27, 2002, in Palm Desert, California, is the fourth of six siblings. Her dad used to be a sheriff and now works for the California DA, and he’s Mexican. Her mom, who’s Mexican and Puerto Rican, works as an ER nurse. Jenna’s great-grandma on her mom’s side came from Mexico without papers, and her grandpa was from Puerto Rico. They lived in La Quinta, California.

Since she was six, Jenna wanted to act so bad, she begged her mom for three years to let her do it. Her mom tried to steer her into soccer and school stuff instead. At one point, Jenna almost gave up acting for soccer. But her mom got her a monologue book and filmed her doing one when she was nine. A casting person saw it, signed her, and then her mom drove her to LA for auditions, sometimes six hours round trip, five days a week.

It wasn’t easy at first because there weren’t many roles for Latina girls like her, and it hurt her confidence. She even thought about dyeing her hair blonde to fit in better. She started with commercials and got into 12 big campaigns, including McDonald’s. She balanced acting with school in La Quinta until eighth grade when she dropped out to focus on Disney gigs, moving to LA and going home on weekends.
